HIGH UINTAS ACCESSIBILITY – Conversation on KSL OUTDOORS – 1st YouTube report

UPDATE JULY 6th:  I just talked with the Forest Service in Duchesne.  They have a team that will drive as far as they can up Hades Canyon, and then hike to Hades Pass and the Grandaddies and have a report by tomorrow on accessibility.  They recommended that I hold off leaving until I get that report tomorrow (Thursday).  I also heard a recorded report on accessibility to Trailheads and key areas of the High Uintas.  Basically it reports spotty snow between 9,000 and 10,000 ft.  Over 10,000 feet, inaccessible still.  Trails leading to the high country are reported as being very muddy, and most streams too high to attempt fording.
You can call:
Duchesne Ranger Station – 435-738-2482
Roosevelt Ranger District – 435-722-5018
Kamas Ranger District –  435-783-4338

I was loading the car to leave today, but will hold off until tomorrow and report what I learn before leaving.  HAPPY BACKPACKING!

My Week’s activities in the High Uintas were discussed on KSL OUTDOORS RADIO
this morning–Saturday July 2nd at the 34:40 minute point.
This scene today is under heavy snow.  Check out my 1st exploratory trip on YouTube

WOW–It Got Complicated!–YouTube Video 1

ANNOUNCEMENT:  June 29th, the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway is now open.

June 28th:  If you looked for me at the SPOT Satellite Tracker link, you didn’t find me.  It got a bit complicated and what I learned and experienced has had me changing a bit my plans for the near future.  I explain it all on my first YouTube video slide show on the High Uintas.  The video reports as of June 28th  the status of the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway, Wolf Creek Pass, and Hades Canyon–the Gateway to the Grandaddies:

ON MY WAY TO THE UINTAS

I”m a couple of days late, but will leave before noon to begin pecking away at my

400 mile Summer backpacking Schedule.
I will first check out the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway, and then:
Drive the Wolf Creek Pass and on to Hanna, Defa’s Ranch and see if I can get up Hades Canyon to the Grandview Trailhead to do my Trip #1. I will be flexible and careful in everything I do.
The link to my SPOT Satellite Tracker is below.  I will only send an OK message once I begin hiking up some trail, and then each evening so the family and friends will know I’m still in the game.  I’ll call in my first report on KSL OUTDOORS on Saturday at about 6:40 a.m. You can listen online at:

UPDATE ON HIGH UINTA PASSES OPENINGS:
Go to:  PASSES  As soon as the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway is plowed I will report here.  By the weekend I will also report on accessibility of the Hades Canyon road to the Grandview Trailhead and access to the Grandaddy Basin where I have scheduled my first trip.

EQUIPMENT and PREPARATION for 2011 backpacking season:
The equipment I used last season as outlined in the Gear/Supplement section remains unchanged as my equipment proved to be about as good as exists and ultralight.  Links to all of it are still valid and will save you a lot of money.  I still follow closely the principles I outline in the article:
 HOW I DO A 3 DAY BACKPACK
Those two items, plus the article entitled:
LIGHTWEIGHT BACKPACKING and GEAR
Will get you safely into the mountains for great backpacking experiences.  Last of all
to go prepared to cope with any survival situation, you should go through the 7 experiences outlined in the photo essay on SURVIVAL

To be in shape and hopefully accomplish my aggressive schedule for 2011 I’ve walked and jogged 100 miles a month working at REAMS for the last 2 years.  Now will come the acid test to see whether it’s made me stronger, or worn out my titanium (“motorcycle”) knee and reconstructed (“football”) ankle!
The Springville REAMS  is at 759 E. 400 So. For the details about where I get my energy, go to:  ENERGY

Keep REAMS alive and show them our gratitude for them giving me a 3 month leave of absence to finish my High Uintas Project.  You’ll love shopping at the BEST!

I have quite a nice collection of wildflower photographs from the 2010 backpacking season in the High Uintas Wilderness Area.  Many of the varieties are already in my collection but eventually some will be inserted in the Gallery section albums to improve the quality.  There are around 12 new varieties bringing the total in the Foothills and Alpine abums to 247.  I have not worked on identifying the new ones, nor labeling the others.  I will include a few photographs of the areas where the photographs were taken.   Just view and enjoy.
