The following was the REPORT on May 27th, 2021

REPORTING IS YOUR OLD HIGH UINTA FRIEND, Cordell, NOW IN MY 86th year and slowed down by a “fractured spine,” and struggling to find a way to heal and alleviate the constant pain, and learning to walk with a basically dead right leg. To walk I have to keep it stiff and use a walking stick. If I relax a bit it collapses and I go down like a rock, so my backpacking days seem to be over with.

I have learned to drive with my left leg, so made a trip up the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway yesterday, May 27th, and then headed for Wolfcreek Pass and down to the North Fork of the Duchesne River, then up the GRANDVIEW TRAILHEAD road. I’ll insert a few pictures I took and then comment. For up-to-date information on Mirror Lake Scenic Byway…….call the Kamas Forest Service office at 435-783-4338

BALD MOUNTAIN & end of accessibility to the Pass on May 27th

This was the spot you could get to on Thursday, May 27th–about 1 mile below Bald Mountain Pass. For the Memorial Day weekend, the Forest Service in Kamas says that with warm weather and melting snows, accessibility will move up the highway a bit every day.

As we can see above, LILY LAKE with some ice still, with Mt. Watson and the Notch in the background. A little more open water in LOST LAKE was being fished in by a family on the other side of the highway.

NOW TO WOLF CREEK PASS & THE GATEWAY TO THE GRANDADDIES

WOLF CREEK PASS that has been open for around a month.

So, on Thursday, May 27th, at SPLASH DAM, the gate was closed. One truck was parked there, likely with the driver hiking up the road from there. The road is closed due to a landslide, and the Forest Service reports it likely won’t be opened until about mid-June. To get up-to-date information call the Duchesne Forest Service office, at 435-738-2482

SINCE MY BOOK WAS PUBLISHED AND MADE AVAILABLE ONLINE, ONLY ONE HAS DIED DURING THE BACKPACKING SEASON (in 2020)–and HE DIDN’T HAVE MY BOOK. OTHER’S LIVES HAVE BEEN SAVED & THE UINTAS MADE MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE & INSPIRING FOR MANY.
