FRIDAY NOV. 13th RISKY BACK SURGERY TO PREVENT BEING A CRIPPLE —

Recently my back problems have converted me into a cripple, just barely being able to walk a little with a hiking stick you see in the photograph. It has been getting progressively worse and so I accepted undergoing a “risky” SURGERY.

THE “RISKY” SURGERY ON November 13th, fusing vertebrae in my mid-back, then  had me released a few days later and for a couple of weeks it turned into unending PAIN

Then back to the clinic, this time in a wheelchair with a hiking staff made by by my son Danny as seen below, and shocked more action with my continual moaning and groaning from pain, followed by another MRI, CT Scan and blood work and another surgery on December 7th, moved quickly to the front of the line that morning:

RELIEF FINALLY CAME…..still  pain but now with improvement every day. X-rays follow:

I missed THANKSGIVING, but hope to be piggy-backed to CHRISTMAS at my daughter Mahana’s home in Provo.  My wonderful kids:  JESSE, NEPHI & MAHANA have kept me alive  along with encouragement from all my children, family and High Uinta/Maya friends.

THANKS! MAY ALL HAVE A BLESSED CHRISTMAS & WONDERFUL NEW YEARS!

From the movie HEAVEN IS FOR REAL, two innocent children–worlds apart saw Him, and she painted the vision, confirmed by Colton as the real Jesus Christ who he saw during his NDE, who I CELEBRATED ON DECEMBER 25th BY WALKING FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MONTHS!

MY CHRISTMAS GIFT WAS TO BE ABLE TO WALK–for the 1st time– FROM JESSE’S CAR TO MAHANA’S HOME FOR OUR FAMILY CHRISTMAS GATHERING!

My son Cordel Ammon “LITO,” on my Facebook page…..scrolling down…. shows–my “EARTHLY MANSION,” seen above as all I have left. I literally did as “As the Rich Young Ruler” was told by the Lord to “GIVE EVERYTHING TO THE WORK OF THE LORD” which I did during my 68 years of serving in Guatemala the “Lord’s little ones,” only retaining this to not be a burden to anyone……which is now parked alongside Jesse’s home in American Fork……..fixed up by Jesse as seen below……

JESSE DOING THE MIRACLE OF FIXING UP THE ENTRANCE TO MY TRAVEL TRAILER (“CABIN-A”) SO I COULD ALONE GET OUT INTO THE WORLD….TO MY WALKER, and MAKE AVAILABLE TO ME THE WHOLE WORLD TO EXPLORE! THANKS JESSE!

NOTE: Notice the rustic stool on the right. It is also seen in my MAYA/GUATEMALA report when I show the first flush toilet and shower room with hot water at the Central House at Valparaiso–the same stool seen in a picture from 40 years ago. I still use it.

INCREDIBLY EMOTIONAL NEW YEARS BECAUSE OF GUATEMALAN BROTHERS & SISTERS & MY FAMILY and U.S. BROTHERS & SISTERS:

For NEW YEAR’S early a phone call came from Guatemala. It was from one of my “TWELVE STRONG” in the Guatemalan Foundation’s COMPLETE FINAL REPORT, Retired Professor Federico Veliz, who I call “THE VOLUNTEER OF ALL VOLUNTEERS who worked as my volunteer partner for 42 years in all of the 33 villages of Santa Cruz Verapaz making it the area of greatest development in my 68 years of dedication to realize “The Impossible Dream!” among THE MAYA in Guatemala. He mentioned many visits from villagers where we built Health Centers, schools, added on classrooms, kitchens, sanitary facilities, even flush toilets and septic tanks, treated hundreds of sick we were able to save, and together underwent death threats, and invitations to join the Guerrillas “or die, “ etc. and that the word had spread to the villages I was unable to walk so Federico and the Mayan Priests and Priestesses got together at their most sacred places and performed rituals to save me. They want me to send a few copies of my book:  A FIFTY YEAR “IMPOSSIBLE DREAM” AMONG MY PEOPLE IN THE MOUNTAINS OF THE MAYA.”
It has to be the most emotional and appreciated phone call of my life!!

Here we see in the isolated Pambach Village, two of my TWELVE STRONG, Miguel Max on the left, and Federico Veliz on the right when we agreed to begin 42 years of working together as volunteers to help the Mayan people. It was Federico who first called on NEW YEARS with an emotional message.
This picture of the Mayan Priest from Santa Cruz will have to represent the Mayans performing rituals for my welfare. He is the one who asked for my framed picture of Christ appearing in the Americans anciently, which for him is a perfect representation of their LEGEND OF THE HOLY ONE who appeared to them anciently.

Federico’s call was followed by another NEW YEARS call, from my volunteer representative from Guatemalan’s Central Highlands (Patzicia), retired Professor Humberto Xicay, with whom I worked as a brother for 32 years. He gave me a 2nd emotional and appreciated message: He had heard that I was becoming a cripple, unable to walk and needed help. They immediately got together and had a special Mass said in my name in their Church, and on that day, January 1 at 5:00 PM another Mass would be done in my name. My brother Humberto is seen below……THANKS, HUMBERTO, & ALL MY BROTHERS & SISTERS FROM PATZICIA.

THEN COMES MANY FROM MY FAMILY WHO REMEMBERED ME IN THEIR PRAYERS…..A SMALL PORTION OF THEM SEEN BELOW AT THE SEPTEMBER 2020 LAKE POWELL REUNION….A LOVING THANKS TO ALL…..

.…….and I must remember my dear friend GARTH NORMAN & his BEAUTIFUL WIFE, CHERYL, who put my name on the LDS AMERICAN FORK TEMPLE PRAYER ROLL

Above you see me with GARTH in 2017 speaking to my beloved brothers & sisters at VALPARAISO.

I deeply appreciated the two NEW YEAR’S CALLS and the thought and prayers of my many Guatemalan/Mayan brothers and sisters, and my many family & High Uinta Friends & especially to the Lord–all helping and making possible me walking again–still very hard and difficult……but I’m getting better with the use of a special hiking stick made by my son Danny. Thanks Danny. HOPE TO SEE YOU ON THE HIGH UINTA TRAILS SUMMER 2021!

I was also blessed with finally being able to lose 30+ extra pounds, and be now at my weight when we made THE RISKY…..JOURNEY TO THE JUNGLES & MOUNTAINS OF THE MAYA in 1967!

NOW THE ADDED CHALLENGE OF JAN. 15th WITH A NEW FALL…BUT COMING BACK ALREADY! BUT IT LOOKS LIKE I STILL NEED YOUR PRAYERS….PLEASE!

However it works out, I have achieved the impossible dreams” since my youth, both with a prime objective of SAVING LIVES! *************
A CONFESSION:

I have been inactive for several months in my 85th year with three problems I’ll tell you about:

1.  On May 11th on an exploratory trip to be able to report to you the accessibility conditions I took THE WORST FALL OF MY LIFE THAT SHOULD HAVE KILLED ME.  Let me describe it for the survival lessons it teaches, I quote:

“I decided for the report on my website I should include pictures of a wildflower in bloom at the lower elevations.  I noticed some in bloom up a steep slope and pulled off the road.  I’d been behind the wheel for an hour or so and as I started up the slope I felt very unsteady with awful balance.  I even strangely thought, “Wow, I could use a hiking stick or trekking pole!”  That I have resisted all these years as usually I had in my hands my camera, or my munchies.  But, I finally got up to the flower, and on the uneven steep slope with rocks and sagebrush, each time I’d try and focus I would lose my  balance, so sat down to get the picture.

Then I started down, but completely forgetting what I have advised going down a steep slope” ALWAYS LEAN INTO THE MOUNTAIN…because if you fall the OTHER WAY, YOU’RE MOST LIKELY DEAD!”  See pages 563-564 of my book. All of a sudden I began losing my balance–one of the first things you begin to lose as you get older.  I did my darndest with me feet to keep up with my body but couldn’t do it as all was happening so quickly and all of a sudden I went head over heels flying downward, apparently hitting the rocks a time or two I determined afterwards seeing the deep dirt and green scuff marks on the back of my shirt, then somehow quite miraculously my body got twisted around in the air–that saved me, before I hit the bottom so I landed with a thud on my back horizontally with the shock evenly distributed the length of my body.  If I had of hit on any angle I would for sure have broke something.  I laid there stunned thinking, “For sure there’s got to be  multiple fractures somewhere–MAYBE EVERYWHERE!”  I carefully moved one leg, then the other. Then each arm.  I raised my head just a little, and then more.  By then I was feeling warm blood on the back of my head.  My left arm shirt sleeve was  soaked with blood.  I carefully sat up, and slowly got to my feet, and noticed nearby my Nikon camera with Zoom lens that separate from me somehow had come down the steep hill with me, dirty with dust, but back in the car I checked it out, and it too had survived without breaking anything.  My first thought, I stupidly had violated the rule and NOT LEANED INTO THE MOUNTAIN.  The second thing that came to mind:  VERY LIKELY MY BACKPACKING DAYS ARE OVER WITH, BUT I WAS ALIVE! Thirdly, once again the supplements I promote in my “Anti-Aging Challenge” chapter in Appendix 5, primarily: Magnesium/Calcium and others, saved my body from any kind of fractures. I mention in the book Dr. Jackson saying, after my hip replacement surgery.

“Your bones are the hardest we’ve ever seen!” WHY? see Appendix 5

IMPORTANT NOTE: As indicated in the story of my fall, BALANCE is one of the first things we lose as we get older, and I’m convinced that some of those who have been lost in the Uintas and never found, very possibly–in the numerous dangerous places in the Uintas have just simply lost their balance as happened to me, and fallen into a ravine, or out of sight area, and are never found.

Like famous Australian backpacker ERIC ROBINSON doing the Highline Trail and disappeared for 5 years, before his bones were finally found at the bottom of a cliff–HE UNDOUBTEDLY LOST HIS BALANCE TRYING TO GET BACK TO THE HIGHLINE TRAIL, AFTER SOMEHOW GETTING WAY OFF COURSE. See pages 156-159 for all the details.

SO PLEASE….BE VERY AWARE AND TAKE SPECIAL CAUTION, especially in the first few days on a trip–until you get your “mountain legs working,” & IN DANGEROUS PLACES…..AND IF YOUR BALANCE IS LESS THAN NORMAL, I GUESS YOU’LL HAVE TO USE TREKKING POLES.

2.  Consequently my back problems that were already bad–having had two surgeries with titanium appliances in my lower back,  but now worse, with discs  worn out and missing in my mid back, my spinal chord being pinched in those locations and the Doctors feel at my age and the nature of the problems its too dangerous to repair with surgery.  The Dr. injected something into my spine, but its doing almost NOTHING! Consequently NO MORE BACKPACKING, JOGGING, but NOT GIVING IN YET–I’m doing daily my 40-50 good pushups, flexibility exercises, an 8 lb. barbell in each hand while watching TV, and walking every day at the American Fork Amphitheater park, climbing up and down holding onto the railing, and will……

……. somehow find a way to again do “the impossible!”

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is AMPHIITHEATER-1024x542.jpg

3.  I had a chance to be exposed to COVID-19, and except for my back, am in better health than others my age so I decided best build up my immunity now, so….

“BRING IT ON WHILE STILL HEALTHY.”

When my blood pressure indicated something was going south in my body I started the CURATIVE LEVEL OF MY WELLNESS FORMULA,

The next day the blood pressure was solved, then had one day later with a temperature of  99.1 F, then one day at 99.9 then always normal. No body pains nor breathing problems, only daily headaches and my taste turned on end for three weeks with even my favorite foods and drinks being NASTY!  But mostly my life continued normally, the normal flu–had years ago before discovering the WELLNESS FORMULA, was many times more miserable & dangerous. YOU CAN HAVE THE WELLNESS FORMULA by buying my book, it being explained in Appendix 5 in the article entitled “THE ANTI-AGING CHALLENGE,” on page 635-636, along with solutions to most problems in the 55 page article, and my survival stories sprinkled throughout the book that can SAVE YOUR LIFE!

“THE GATEWAY TO THE GRANDADDIES”

The road along the North Fork of the Duchesne River is in great shape, and past Defa’s Dude Ranch the gate is open to drivce up Hades Canyon you see here, with Lightning Ridge crossing the picture. No sign of snow.
Up to the Splash Dam there is no sign of snow, with the road in good shape.
In the vecinity of the GRANDVIEW TRAILHEAD there is a little snow along the road, but the road is dry.
On Thursday, June 11th there were three or four vehicles in the upper parking lot.
Here’s a view of the Register, with entries from June 3 on mentioning having had to deal with lots of snow. One entry on June 11th lists a party of 4 going for two nights to Fern Lake.
For sure this weekend of June 12th, Saturday the 13th and Sunday the 14th the parking lot will fill up with day hikers and backpackers. GOOD LUCK & let me know how you do. Above I’m on the East Grandaddy Mountain saddle, viewing Grandaddy Lake and the Basin.

NOW ON TO THE MIRROR LAKE SCENIC BYWAY

Here we see the PROVO RIVER FALLS . All the lower areas along the Highway are open with campers here and there, and all the minor trailheads in the lower country are open.
Here is a rough panorama of both sides of the CRYSTAL LAKE TRAILHEAD with a lot of cars as you can see.
This is TRIAL LAKE at the entrance to the Crystal Lake Trailhead area, with NOTCH PASS in the right distance, pretty well free of snow.
Here we are on 10,759 foot high BALD MT. PASS, with snow here and there, and still no access to the Trailhead and parking lot.
Here we are coming down into the Mirror Lake area with Hayden Peak on the left center, and Mt. Agassiz on the right.
We are here at the Hayden Peak Overlook, with Moosehorn Lake in the foreground.
We are seeing a portion of Mirror Lake with Bald Mountain in the background. There were a couple of cars in the Mirror Lake Trailhead parking lot.
Further along we swing by Pass Lake and then on the left is the entrance to the Pass Lake Trailhead.
Then we come to the entrance to the HIGHLINE TRAILHEAD, with just a little snow on the road to the parking lot, but it will be gone by tomorrow, but the lot was filling up when I dropped by on Friday.
The TRAILHEAD has an addition as those of you familiar with it will notice. It is a new register.
This was the register in 2019 and before, usually just a few pages ripped out of a notebook. I never could figure out why the Trailhead of THE MOST IMPORTANT TRAIL IN ALL OF UTAH….THE “HIGHLINE TRAIL” was so humiliated!
I tried to remedy that in 2019 by fixing up a register and gifted it to the Forest Service, as you can see above, with pages I photocopied filling it as seen below.
Well, something finally happened….A NEW VERY NICE REGISTER.
The FOREST SERVICE changed very appropriately the cover photo, but I was pleased to find my loose-leaf binder now put to use and filled up with great pages for maybe the first time in history.
A few trips have been attempted, like one to PACKARD LAKE which is at a lower elevation and likely accessible without too much snow in the way. The Naturalist Basin, and points further east might be a little more difficult now, but when I came back by on Friday, the parking lot was filling up with adventurers. LET ME KNOW HOW YOU DO.
Then down to the North Slope seeing magnificent OSTLER PEAK, and the road to Christmas Meadows and the Christmas Meadows/Stillwater Trailhead.
OSTLER PEAK & SPREAD EAGLE MOUNTAIN.
The TRAILHEAD is about 5 miles from the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway.
Quite a bit of activity as the Trailhead is in lower country, but with trails to the Amethyst Basin, and to Middle Basin with Ryder & McPheeter Lakes, and to West Basin with Lake Kersuh. I would suspect there would be quite a bit of snow in the high country still.
Last of all about 100 yards in on the Whitney Road, is found what was once a magnificent display on the HILLIARD FLUME. It’s a story I tell in my book, about the tie hackers, and all of such displays would be more than worthwhile replacing….HINT, HINT!

scroll down for all the information you will need to get my book which has all the updated information, and topographical maps you will need for unending adventures in our wonderful HIGH UINTA MOUNTAINS.

2019 DWR STOCKING OF HIGH UINTA LAKES

NOTE: I have taken the DWR listing of all stocking done during 2019, and separated out those lakes and reservoirs in the High Uinta area: Summit, Daggett, Uintah, and Duchesne Counties. They are listed in two pages you can download.

The one IMPORTANT NEW STOCKING is in CRATER LAKE, the Uinta’s and Utah’s deepest lake at 147′, originally the lake had brook trout, then tiger trout were added, and for 2019 SPLAKE–a brook trout/lake trout hybrid.

The possibilities are exciting! I just wish I could make it back there one more time–I’m now in my 85th year & hurting some.

This is the Utah “catch & release” record SPLAKE, caught at Joe’s Valley Reservoir in 2017. Due to the short growing season in the High Uintas, splake will not grow this large, but it will be exciting to see how the stocking in Crater Lake develops.

A HARD-PRINTED VERSION

A recent order of 12 PRINTED BOOKS has been shipped that brings to 32 those who wanted and are grateful for the HARD COPY.

A new list of those wanting the printed book is now underway. Email me if you want to be on the list. cordellandersen@hotmail.com

*************************************

The HIGH UINTA MOUNTAINS book…….

……… is LARGE FORMAT with over 1,600 full-color photographs, 120 topographical & road maps, 730 pages printed on photographic paper of the highest quality and divided into two volumes as seen below–all of which is costly. I got one for myself at Office Depot that cost me $173.50, and was then surprised how many of my High Uinta Friends just had to have a hard copy too.

One of my Explorers from 1960, Merrill Finlayson–quoted in the beginning of this post, led to me talking to the printer and learning by ordering 10 or more at a time I would be given a discount allowing me to offer the book for $140 with sales tax and shipping included. So…….

….if your interest is having a PRINTED COPY OF THE BOOK with spiral binding as seen below, cost is $140. Prices include sales tax, and shipping. Email me at: cordellandersen@hotmail.com.  When we have accumulated a list of 10 or more interested I will advise you so you can send me a check, and I will place the order with the printer — and in short order send your book via U.S. Postal Service.

FLASH! I’m forming a new list of those interested. Email me if interested (cordellandersen@hotmail.com ). You might have to wait a while on the new list to get to 10.

https://cordellmandersen.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/09-1024x764.jpg

The SPIRAL BINDING is best for individuals as it will stay open to the page of your choice. The DIGITAL VERSION also facilitates printing the pages of your choice or the entire book.

Also available is a “library friendly” version so call numbers can be visibly added and make possible shelving–seen below.

https://cordellmandersen.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/11-1024x772.jpg

THE LIBRARY FRIENDLY VERSION WITH REGULAR BINDING–Seen above is available for $150 each. You should advise your Public Library and encourage them to order the book as otherwise they will have an information gap that only this book can fill. They have to first advise us via email of their sure interest–and then wait for the list to grow so we can make an order with the printer at which time they will be advised so their check can be forwarded.

Film maker CHRIS SMEAD was the master of ceremonies for the very successful presentation.

For information go to: https://highlinefilm.com/

Comments by CORDELL M ANDERSEN:

I heartily send my thanks and congratulations to Chris Smead & the OUTMERSIVE organization for producing this wonderful movie and guide. This of course includes those who made the difficult backpack of the entire Highline Trail — from the eastern end of the trail near Flaming Gorge all the way — 104 miles– to the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway HIGHLINE TRAILHEAD at Hayden Pass.

In a month or so, and for sure several months before the 2020 backpacking season, I will publish & make available FREE here on my website a:

Guide to ENJOYABLY & SAFELY Do the HIGHLINE TRAIL.

There were problems encountered, shown in the movie, two of the original backpackers having to bail out unable to finish the hike: One with High Altitude Sickness problems, and another with blisters and feet problems. Both of these potential problems for hikers and backpackers are addressed in my book--with many related problems listed in the INDEX — the blisters and feet problems are found listed under GEAR, clothes & footgear.

NO MORE BLISTERS BACKPACKING, RUNNING HALF-MARATHONS–SINCE USING THESE SOCKS!

Another section of my GUIDE FOR THE HIGHLINE TRAIL, will be to list many points along the way from which with just short hikes or detours you can visit– AREAS CONSIDERED THE MOST BEAUTIFUL & AMAZING OUTDOOR SCENES IN UTAH, but never mentioned nor shown in the movie such as: The Red Castle area, and Triangle Mt. and Reconnaissance Lake seen below–& others.

Another category of my GUIDE will be to point out the opportunities along the Highline Trail for WONDERFUL FISHING — including THOSE FISHING SPOTS WITH THE POTENTIAL OF PRODUCING UTAH RECORD BREAKING TROUT and GRAYLING. Fishing is never mentioned in the movie but my guide will reveal all the secrets, but all should be coupled with information and maps found in my book.

RECORD CUTTHROAT – ARCTIC GRAYLING -BROOKIES

REPORT ON PRESENTATION AT REI Salt Lake City on Oct. 15th

I was appreciative of a good-sized group, especially as among them was my life-long backpacking buddy Ted Packard, and my sister Jolene Andersen along with a dozen or so other family members. I’ll insert below pictures of me with Ted and Jolene, but first a humorous reaction by my daughter, Cindy Marie as she reported on Facebook. She said:

😂

” Dad did so good at his High Uintas presentation! He’s so funny! His teeth started to fall out & he told us all about it as he was taking them out, as he said, ‘To avoid choking to death and be able to finish!’……haha! So many great things! Funny things! Cordell Andersen is a great story teller! 83 yrs young & killing it! just released his book! check it out!”

My little sister Jolene & me at REI Salt Lake
Me, along with Ted Packard my original “trail buddy” from 1952. In 2008, along with Charlie Peterson, we had our GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY BACKPACK–mentioned with a photo in the book.
